Chapter Eleven

“Cade, Avalon, it’s time to get moving. We are losing daylight.” Ashby’s voice filters through the tent. I moan snuggling deeper into the warmth that is Cade. His hand rubs up and down my spine in a soothing way as he kisses the top of my head.

“Come on, flower, let’s get you fed and dressed.”

I groan. “We just went to sleep, and I hate mornings.”

Rolling on top of me, he gives my nose a soft kiss before standing. I watch him as he pushes his hard cock into his pants. I swear that thing is always hard. I roll my eyes and turn into the blankets, hiding my face. I hear him cleaning up and dressing, then all of a sudden, the blanket is gone and cool air greets me momentarily before a smack on my ass has me squealing. I hop up, seething, standing in only my tunic. I squeal at Cade, and he smirks.

“Clean up and get dressed, mate. I will bring you some breakfast.” Cade steps out of the tent and I hear Ashby cackling. “I am so glad I don’t have to wake her up anymore. My advice? Give her coffee. Lots of coffee.”

I groan again in exasperation, but wash quickly with what little water we have and get dressed, packing up our tent as I go. Minutes later, Cade returns, breakfast in hand, and thankfully he listened to Ashby because he has a steaming cup of coffee. I grin, taking the coffee, and we sit and eat before packing up and meeting everyone.

Outside, the sun shines brightly and the cool air takes my breath for a minute. Once my eyes adjust to the bright sun and white landscape, I see Himavan and his second talking with Ashby, Roman, and Callan. Nuada stands beside Ashby and I struggle with my feelings toward her. I know that some of them are unfounded, like the jealousy, but they are unfortunately there nonetheless. What bothers me most is that she left without telling Ashby_that he worried all those days about her whereabouts, that she put herself in danger without thinking how it would affect Ashby. I hope that, now that they are fully mated, she will be loyal to Ashby. So, I must try to make a better effort.

Giggling turns me toward the horses. A smitten Dune is helping Beira onto a horse, much to her displeasure. She’s dressed in leathers but is still wearing her signature dress over them. I will never understand how she and Skadi stand to wear them.

Skadi, however, is already on her horse, giggling at her sister’s predicament. Her cloak is not on her shoulders but wrapped around her waist. She’s wearing her dress off her shoulder, leaving her mating mark visible to us all.

I feel Cade stiffen beside me when he notices.

A pang of regret, fear, and longing buries deep into my soul.

I want to allow Cade to bite me, but trusting others has never been easy for me. My life as a demon has made me strong, yet I have always been lonely.
